 | Why should the government bail out AIG with our tax money? What do they mean by being "Too Big to Fail"? | 1 | |

Does it make sense to take taxpayer bailouts and pay $165 million in executive bonuses for their job well done? |

One of the major lessons of the Great Depression of the 1930's we learned was that the financial system is key in a properly functioning free market economy. In the 1930's, banks were allowed to fail, and confidence in the financial system collapsed. The FDIC now seamlessly re-opens failed banks while guaranteeing deposits, resulting in high confidence in our deposit handling financial institutions.
During the peak of the financial crisis of 2008, interbank lending froze, after Lehman was allowed to fail. As the government did not foresee that problem, they stepped in when AIG ran out of cash, fearing other potential problems creating a domino effect of failures in financial institutions.
It's as if AIG built some massively high building that's now unstable, and threatens to fall down and hurt surrounding buildings and people. So what's the problem with paying executive bonuses? Well it's not the executives fault that the inmates were allowed to run the asylum. Why would they not "reward" themselves given the chance?
AIG executives were hired to build and grow the organization, and they've failed. We need forensic accountants to oversee the organization now, as the goal is to dismantle the organization, not grow it. That's a step the government failed to put in place. | |

Best Answer So far: Answered by: Doug - 26 Months Ago. 1) George W. Bush 19% approval in February 2008 is the lowest ever. After years of war in Iraq.
2) Harry S. Truman's 22% approval in February 1952 was the second lowest. After firing MacArthur and many months of bloody stalemate during the Korean War.
3) Richard Nixon is third lowest, with 24% in July and August 1974 during the Watergate scandal.
